Active Transport Resolution

Whereas Morgantown has the goal of making Active Transport the irresistible option for all residents, students, employees, and employers;

Whereas the region has major traffic congestion;

Whereas the United States is experiencing an obesity epidemic;

Whereas Walking an extra 15 minutes per day results in 5 pounds of fat consumed per year;

Whereas the regional air quality is noncompliant or borderline non compliant, according to EPA standards;

Whereas a single person communing by car, who switches a 20-mile round trip commute to existing public transport, can reduce his/her annual CO 2 emissions by 4,800 pounds per year;

Whereas the Morgantown area is blessed with nearly 50 miles of rail trails;

Whereas September 22 has been declared National-Leave-Your-Car-at-Home Day;

Whereas MRTC has declared October 5-10 as Rail-Trail-to-Work Week;

Be it hereby resolved that Morgantown City Council encourages employers, employees, students, and residents to actively commute and Rail-Trail-to-Work for the remainder of 2009.
