What is Active Transport?

Although motor vehicles increase our speed and load capacity, many forms of human-powered transport remain popular for reasons of lower cost, leisure, physical exercise and environmentalism. This is particularly true for short trips (less than 2 miles for walking and less than 5 miles for biking) if we are just moving ourselves and what we can carry. Getting places under our own power is beneficial to ourselves, our families and our communities.

Why Now?

On March 17 Morgantown City Council passed a resolution proclaiming 2009 as Morgantown's Year of Active Transport. The goal is to have local residents be more physically involved in their own transportation. People are encouraged to get out of their cars and to walk, bike or use the Mountain Line and PRT to get where they need to go.

A Year of Active Transport coordinating committee has established the following goals:

- Increase active commuting among WVU students by 15 percent.

- Increase the percentage of Morgantown residents actively commuting to work by 10 percent.

- Increase the percentage of children actively commuting to school by 10 percent.
